Illustrated Faith | Cori Peck

Another BEAUTIFUL Monday with you, and another WONDERFUL guest with us today! I am so excited to have Cori with us today!!! She is an inspiration not only in her work but in her grace for those around her.

Cori is a homeschooling, pediatrician mother of Girls who has collected photos and memories her whole life. Her first scrapbook was a Trip Book she put together with her father when she was 4 years old. She began her life as a modern-day scrapbooker before the birth of her oldest daughter almost 13 years ago. Since then, she has spent countless hours recording the lives of her family, focusing on this amazing life God has given her. Her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis 5 years ago solidified her need to document life, because with her lousy, often humorous lack-of-memory, 'if it's not written down, it didn't happen.' You can occasionally find her blogging at www.cdpeck-itsmine.blogspot.com or daily find her sharing photos on instagram.

I was raised in a traditional, conservative, Southern Baptist household by two parents who love the Lord and who both love books. I was raised to love the written word, to love the books that hold them, to respect and honor the men and women who had given themselves to the practice of putting pen to page. The Bible is the Word of God, and is therefore the ultimate book deserving our love, honor, and respect.

In our home, respecting a book means taking care of that book: not breaking the spine, not folding the corners down to mark our page, and ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY NO WRITING IN THE BOOK. The goal of reading a book is to ensure the book looks as pristine after you finish reading it as it did on the shelf of the bookstore. There should be zero sign that the book has been touched, opened, or manipulated. If we were required to underline or mark up a text for school, my parents would buy two copies of the book: one for me to 'ruin' and one for us to preserve on the shelves of our home. Any and all underlining must be done with a straight edge (what my Dad has always called rulers) in a blue or black ballpoint pen that is used throughout the entire book so that the book's appearance remains consistent. Notes should not be taken in the margins. They should be written in a separate notebook with a reference to the page, line, and quote being discussed. Doodling is strictly forbidden.

Some of you may find this a bit obsessive-compulsive and a bit odd, but it is what I grew up knowing. Not crunching and marking up books is how we showed our respect to the books. This was especially true of God's Word. Our family has one Bible that is the designated Family Bible where births, deaths, and baptisms are gently recorded. One year for Christmas, my parents gave my brother and me Bibles with their favorite verses carefully underlined for us to know where God had spoken to them, and this remains one of my most priceless possessions.

You may be wondering what this has to do with art journaling and using our Bibles for art and meditation. If you have seen my Instagram feed, you'll know that my first artsy page in my Bible caused me physical pain. I was nauseated, jittery, and anxious. I had goosebumps, and the hair on the back of my neck tingled. I had thought that by using one of my older Bibles, I would be ok with the art and not worry that I was defacing and messing up the Word of God. I was wrong. My goal was to not spend any money for this new-to-me art form. I would only use what I already had, and that included my Bible. I love scrapbooking. I enjoy art journaling, and the concept of combining these creative outlets with my daily Quiet Time called to me (I mean, seriously...making an inky mess and calling it worship and prayer? You had me at 'Hello").

My art journaling has developed over the last few years as a way for me to cry out to God. I play with color and scriptures and song texts when my MS-brain fog prevents me from forming coherent thoughts and making complex decisions. My art journal is a place where I call out to God and meditate on His Word without fear of messing something up. In a separate space (my art journal), I am not afraid to try new things. I do not worry about what will bleed through and ruin the page behind it. I focus on the words, the colors, the textures, and it is all good.

I admit that after my first anxiety-ridden page in my favorite large print Bible, I set that Bible aside and ordered an OFFICIAL journaling Bible from amazon. I did this not because I wanted to spend the money, but because I knew that this Bible art journaling 'thing' has me excited to study and read God's Word again. I knew that if I invested in a dedicated Bible that I gave myself permission to write in, then I could enjoy the freedom of prayer and worship in my Bible without the anxiety, and that my precious Life Application Bible could return to its honored place on my shelf. I knew that I would have a place where I can make mistakes, where I can make a mess, where I can ruin a page just by covering the back with gesso. I knew that I could be free to use whatever supplies I have, be it pen and pencil today, or watercolor and stamps tomorrow, without the fear of ruining God's Word. I admit that there are some entries I like more than others. I admit that I have made mistakes. I admit that I have ruined a page or two. But that is ok. God is happy with my work. He is happy that I am spending time with Him. He is happy that I am creating and meditating on His Word. For every verse and passage that I read and study and personalize, I am growing closer to Him and abiding in His love. And that is a good thing.

If you take nothing else away from reading this post today, I hope you know this: God loves YOU. He wants to spend time with you. He wants you to know Him. If giving yourself permission to draw in, write in, or paint in a Bible is what it takes to encourage you to spend time reading His Word and to draw closer to Him, then please do it. We are all different. We all create art differently. We all have different handwriting. We all have different supplies and talents. We all have different budgets. None of that matters. All that matters is that you are reading and praying and worshiping God. This is your relationship with Him, your learning, your creating, your time. And in the end, the only One whose approval you need is His.

Thank yo so much Cori for sharing exactly where you are at. I think so many people can relate to feeling like "it's not ok" to write in their bible. It is one of the reasons I first got a journaling bible, it was also my hang up, but not looking back that was silly. God just wants you in the word, no matter how you get here. He created you a as a visual and creative person for a reason, embrace it!!!

Thank you guys for supporting Cori and showing her the love!!!

Reflect Sunday | Illustrated Faith

Good morning. I might be a bit long winded this morning so grab a cup of coffee and sit with me. Can I just be totally open and honest with you? You guys BLOW my mind. The faith radiating from this group astounds me. I have been at a conference this weekend called the Influence Conference, and it is a Christian conference that focuses on how we are using our influence in our online communities and I have to tell you, so many people came up to be and talked to me about the WORK you guys are doing in here. Tina came up to me and shared with me how this is changing her walk with God, and her husband's thoughts on it, I really could not have said it better so I wanted to share a blurb from his blog
"When a translator converts the Bible into a new language, it opens the Bible to a new group of people and that’s amazing. There are very few Christ followers who would complain about that because it expands the influence of Christianity.
Have you ever thought that a translation isn’t the only way to expand the influence of God’s Word? There are so many more ways to expand the influence of God’s Word using creativity."
I keep going back and reading it over and over again because it is exactly how I feel and he said it so beautifully! Thank you for sharing that with me Tina!
My thoughts and prayers were with this group all weekend. One thing that really sat on my heart was that GOD wants us SIMPLY as we are. He doesn't need us to make things PRETTY or wait to start until we have mastered hand lettering, or until the perfect stamp comes. He wants you to come ALIVE TODAY. Don't wait to be "pretty" for God, he wants us right where are at, HOT MESS and all. If you feel like this process is pulling you closer to the word and your relationship with God just DIVE in, don't wait. There was a time that I would not have even brought my bible with me, but during this trip I couldn't get to my bible QUICK enough! That has never happened before... EVER and I don't think God was thinking "oh my that washi really wasn't what I was going for" . ... your love letter to God is beautiful just the way it is.
With all that being said I needed to ask myself what I was holding back until it was "pretty enough" "good enough" "ready" and so I wanted to share that with you today. I am starting a website dedicated to this, so we can all have a central place use as a resource. It is still in the baby stage but why am I holding this back from you when you guys are my partners in all this, and can lift it up in prayer. I am sure you have seen me tagging things with ‪#‎illustratedfaith‬ and now you know why!
So this Sunday I want us to just peel back what we are HOLDING back. Let's share our authentic place, put it out there! Get vulnerable, get honest, get WEIRD! Wherever you are with God TODAY is exactly the place to start! Trust HIM, go with HIM, BE with HIM. The dreams you have for yourself have no comparison to what he has in store for you so let it go to HIM!
Love you guys and thank you for all you do! xox

Journaling Bible | Bonita Rose

Happy Monday! Please welcome Bonita to my blog today! I will never forget when I woke up one day to a flood of comments from Bonita, she had just discovered the process of using a journlaing bible to a creative way and you could tell she was EXCITED!!! That fire has only gotten brighter so of course I had to ask her to join us as a guest!!

I stumbled upon the #journalingbible community one day on IG. I was browsing images and suddenly saw someone's page I really loved. I saw their hashtag on IG and clicked on that. Then it seems like I went down the rabbit hole! I read all of Shanna's posts on her blog, and that day, ordered myself two journaling bibles, one single column, the other double column - so I would have one each to one day gift to each of my two daughters. In the meantime, I had fun getting messy with color in one of my older thrift store Bibles, so much fun!

My relationship with the Lord hasn't always been front and center in my life. I was raised in a home an only child, with parents that didn't believe in God and hardly ever took me to church. The stories in the Bible, the great message of salvation - I only learned many years later as an adult in my 20s, after going through a lot of pain and heartache in my life. A relationship with Jesus was what I was looking for. And as you know, our Lord never disappoints. My Savior has always been there for me after that. Always.

I've always been creative, and always loved to write. And yes, I love lots of color! I blogged and wrote my heart out before blogging was even mainstream. I started paper-crafting when my first daughter was born, over 21 years ago. And I've kept up with it. I have 12x12 albums for each of my daughters, as well as now, I devote about a 1/2 hour/week to work on my Project Life pages. For me right now, that's doable. Everything else I play with and create -- is purely for fun. And I love that!

The Lord has done so much in my life. A few years ago, my hubby and I were praying to one day move from the frozen plains of ND to somewhere warm and hopefully, coastal. It was always a dream. It's amazing what the Lord does in your life when you truly seek HIM with your whole heart. God gave us above and beyond what we could have asked or even hoped for, and now, my husband, our dog and I are living the beach life, on the sands of the Atlantic Ocean in FL. We moved here in 2012. Every day, I am more than thankful. God is alive. I see it every day. In so many little things.

Pairing my creativity with my faith and my personal walk with the Lord is  something that feels just so natural to me. I've always been an encourager, and always tried to uplift and encourage and empower others. I love to inspire, so what better than to inspire them with the life-giving Word of God? I am thankful for this community of people that love the Lord and want to shine their creativity for Him.
In everything, may our God  be praised.
Jesus, may You be glorified in all I do.

Today, I'm giving away a Gift Pack of some of my favorite items from my Etsy shop: some painted deli paper strips, some painted tip-in cards, some Artsy Bits, and a pack of my Artsy pages! If you leave a comment here on Shanna's blog with your email address, I'll pick a name to receive ALL these goodies next Friday Sept 19th
In the meantime, dig into God's Word and enjoy your creative time with Him.

Journaling Bible | Writing in the Margins

It's Friday!!!... And better than that it's Friday of a three day weekend (for some of us)! We have family in town and lots of fun to be had, how about you? I was talking with you the other day about some plans I had for the silkscreen in Whitman. I thought it would be PERFECT for my journaling bible, as it would allow the text to show through while still making a statement on the page! I also love that you can play with color, so I got out my color theory paints and dabbed a little at the top of the silkscreen. From there you simply drag the color across the page (you can use an old gift card, or any straight edge for this).

What I like about this process is that you can CLEARLY see the text below, but the graphic is so catchy! What don't like about this process is now I want a dozen silkscreen from Studio Calico, and this is their first one. So I am going to start a petition for more silkscreen LOL! But for real, I love them so!

This week instead of using sermon notes I took one of my favorite songs from this weeks worship and reflected on it a bit. It has been in my head all week, and I love that it works perfectly in 1 Timothy as it also talks about temptation. The text reads; so teach my song to rise to you when temptation comes my way". Isn't that just beautiful?! I love it.

To join a community of us journaling in our bibles please join us in our facebook group

Over the past couple of weeks a lot of you have reached out and shared how the process of being artistic in your bible has changed you, changed you relationship with God, changed your outlook and I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart, those letters mean the world to me! Some of you have also suggested a book called Writing in the Margins by Lisa Nichols Hickman. Naturally I picked up one for myself as well as one for YOU! This book is PERFECTION. It takes every single thing I have been trying SO hard to put into words right there in black and white (with some doodles!!). The quotes in this book will stop you in your tracks as you think this book was a love letter to you personally, because it is. I got it last night and have already highlighted, dog eared and doodles all over it! I can't wait to share it with you!

There are several ways to enter to win this book:
1. Enter a comment with a link to where you shared it on instagram
2. Enter a comment with a link to where you shared it on your personal facebook
3. Enter a comment to where you shared it on your personal blog

*please enter a separate comment for each entry (one entry per social media post)

Winner will be posted on Monday September 1st, good luck!
